After living in, and painting New York City life, for close to twenty years, Michelle Spark moved her studio, in 1993, to Phoenicia, NY in the heart of the forever wild Catskill Mountain State Park. Here, she has been exploring landscape as metaphor and image. Really seeing the intricacies and wildness of nature has been a quest of hers. Spark has exhibited nationally, both in solo and group exhibitions. Her most recent shows have been in the heart of the Catskills, at Zen Mt. Monastery, Mt. Tremper, NY; Upstate Gallery, Phoenicia, NY; Catskill Mountain Foundation, Hunter, NY; and Erpf Gallery at the Catskill Center, Arkville, NY. She is a fellow at the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, in Sweet Briar, VA, and was a visiting artist at Atelier der Stadt, Kunstlerhaus, Salzburg, Austria. Articles have appeared about Michelle Spark in the Print Collectors Newsletter, Art News, Art in America, The New York Times, The Woodstock Times, Phoenicia Times and The Miami Herald. Besides many private collections, her works are displayed in several hospitals and many corporations, including American Express, Chase, Fleet American, Pfizer, Prudential, Readers Digest, United Technologies. The University of Arkansas, The New School for Social Research, University of Oklahoma have works of hers in their collections Michelle Spark was born in Philadelphia in 1951. She studied painting at the University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Fine Arts and Queens College. After completing a masters degree in Art Therapy at New York University, she also taught there and worked in a large metropolitan New York hospital for many years. Currently, she devotes all her time to painting, Zen practice, local watershed concerns, and her family. |
